Peritoneal dialysis clinics during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak: Information for patients

Page updated: 21/12/2021

Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic we are reducing the number of people coming into the hospital for outpatient peritoneal dialysis (PD) appointments to reduce the risk of catching or spreading the virus.

We know that you may be worried about coming to the hospital for your clinic appointment. We have made changes to clinic to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.

In-person clinic appointment:

If you are invited to an in-person clinic in the Liz Bake Renal Unit in Morriston Hospital please attend clinic as planned if you are able. Please arrive just before your appointment time in order to avoid congestion in the waiting area. You will have a blood test.

Wherever possible, we request that patients are not accompanied by a relative to the outpatient appointment. You are welcome to bring your relative to the door, but we would be grateful if they could return to the car to wait.

Telephone appointment:

Your renal doctor or PD nurse may arrange a telephone appointment with you instead of an in-person clinic visit. The renal doctor or a member of the renal team will contact you to arrange a date and time for a telephone appointment.

The renal doctor or PD nurse may ask you to have a blood test. The team will arrange for you to receive a blood form and inform you when to have the blood test.

After your in-person or telephone appointment:

The renal doctor will then make an appointment for your next clinic. We don’t know how long COVID-19 (coronavirus) will be a problem, so the next appointment may be in-person or on the telephone.

Medication and PD supplies:

If you usually collect medication from the renal pharmacy you will be supplied with your medication as usual. Your PD supplies will be provided to you as usual.
