“In childhood, habits are easily formed-good and bad. Why not concentrate on the formation of only good habits and thus avoid the necessity later on in life of attempting to correct bad habits… The proper development of body and mind, through the new science of 'Contrology' is what must be taught to the child” - Joseph Pilates.
Joseph Pilates believed there was a role in educating children about Pilates. If children learn about controlled movement and exercises plus good posture, it can only benefit them as their bodies grow, develop and change. As children grow, their bodies are in a constant state of change and development. Correctly or incorrectly, it is here where they will formulate the physical attributes that they will take through life. Pilates can help establish correct principles of movement that children will use for their entire lives. It will also help create a balanced musculature that can help alleviate pain and reduce the potential for injury both now and as they continue to grow into adulthood. Through Pilates, children can gain awareness of their body, and learn how to move efficiently and gracefully.
Maybe it is the psychosocial and mental health benefits of children doing Pilates which is the most positively impactful however. These benefits include:
• Self-efficacy
• Self-concept
• Self-worth
• Motivation and goal orientation
• Reduces anxiety and stress
• Improves sleep
• Helps social interaction and peer acceptance
