Professional training and teaching

The MRI Physics group is involved in many activities to promote Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) safety, best practice and workforce training and development:

  • MRI safety education is key to minimise any risks in the MRI environment, for both patients and staff. We deliver MRI safety training resources for various staff groups (i.e. radiographers, nurses), and can offer tailored support (in person or online) for any MRI safety related needs.
  • We take a major role in the teaching of courses at Swansea University including the MSc programmes in Medical Radiation Physics and Clinical Science (Medical Physics). Dr. Phillips is the module lead for the following modules which we deliver as a team:
    • PMPM04: Medical Imaging
    • PMPM16: Advanced MRI Physics
    • PMPM26: Imaging with Non-ionising Radiation

  • We are accredited to provide training to scientific training programme (STP) trainees in the Imaging with Non-ionising Radiation (INIR) specialism. The aim of the STP is to produce graduates who will possess the essential knowledge, skills, experience and attributes required of a newly-qualified Clinical Scientist in the NHS. Many will work directly with patients and all will have an impact on patient care and outcomes.
    • We work closely with our colleagues in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board who provide the ultrasound and other non-ionising radiation specialist training. We also host trainee clinical scientists from other medical physics disciplines from all over Wales for their MRI rotational training.
    • In addition to the STP route to HCPC registration, we provide training to ‘Route 2’ trainees in MRI Physics. This route is sometimes more appropriate for individuals who have already completed an IPEM accredited MSc in Medical Physics or equivalent.
  • We provide MRI training to radiologists:
    • FRCR MRI Physics training via the Imaging Academy at Pencoed
    • Cardiac MRI for Radiologists at the Imaging Academy
  • And to radiographers:
    • St. Joseph’s Cardiac MRI Course
