Safety

Our team is involved in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) safety on a day-to-day basis and it is core to the services we provide.

Two of our team members are accredited Magnetic Resonance Safety Experts (MRSEs), having passed the American Board of MR Safety MRSE examination and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) MRSE Certificate of Competence.

The MRI Physics team has worked on a service improvement project to reduce the waiting time for patients needing a safety investigation, with a redesign of the process to make it more timely and efficient.

As part of this, we have developed regional MR safety procedures for sets of implants, particularly those that are considered to present a low safety risk. The benefits of MRI generic implant policies (GIPs) are to:

  • Facilitate the decisions to proceed with MRI scanning where appropriate
  • Reduce resources required to obtain and evaluate specific implant information avoiding unnecessary delays and potential last-minute cancellations to MRI scans
  • Support MRI staff by clearly defining and documenting agreed procedures

Under a comprehensive MR Safety Policy, we offer support for scanning patients with MR unlabelled cardiac implanted electronic devices (CIEDs) i.e. pacemakers and ICDs, small devices for treating dangerously abnormal heart rhythms. This has led to the establishment of the first non-conditional MRI scanning clinical service in Wales.

Rydym yn croesawu gohebiaeth a galwadau ffôn yn y Gymraeg neu'r Saesneg. Atebir gohebiaeth Gymraeg yn y Gymraeg, ac ni fydd hyn yn arwain at oedi. Mae’r dudalen hon ar gael yn Gymraeg drwy bwyso’r botwm ar y dde ar frig y dudalen.

We welcome correspondence and telephone calls in Welsh or English. Welsh language correspondence will be replied to in Welsh, and this will not lead to a delay. This page is available in Welsh by clicking ‘Cymraeg’ at the top right of this page.
