Trainee Clinical Scientist
Dr Stephen Bawden is a Route 2 Trainee Clinical Scientist in MRI aiming for Health and Care Professions Council Registration in 2026.
He completed his PhD in MRI physics from the University of Nottingham in 2014, investigating the effects of dietary interventions on hepatic metabolism. From 2014 - 2024 he worked as a research fellow in the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre, alongside the NIHR gastrointestinal and liver disorder team at the QMC Nottingham University Hospital.
His studies focussed on both the development of novel MRI methodologies and the application of techniques for experimental medicine. At the University of Nottingham his work included developing multinuclear MRS for in-vivo measurements of oxidative stress, modelling SAR and B1 mapping for parallel transmit abdominal coils at 7T, and optimizing 13C and 31P MRS protocols. He also ran multiple healthy and patient trials including the effects of dietary glycaemic index on liver health, sprint interval training in diabetic patients, the multi organ impact of bariatric surgery, and liver and MSK metabolism throughout the menstrual cycle.
