Walking and cycling in Swansea Bay

People of all abilities benefit from fresh air and exercise, and walking and cycling are positive ways to improve your overall fitness and wellbeing. Travelling under your own steam rather than by car is known as 'active travel' and benefits include:

  • improvements in your health and wellbeing
  • fewer cars on the road, reducing congestion
  • reductions in carbon emissions and cleaner air
  • better connections between local communities
  • enhanced access to employment, education, and key services

The active travel network in Swansea alone has over 127 km (nearly 80 miles) of on and off-road cycle and walking routes, enjoyed by people of all abilities. And did you know that three out of five journeys made in Neath Port Talbot are under five miles?

There are some great pathways to explore in and around Swansea Bay - not just for your leisure, but also for everyday journeys as an alternative to using your car for shorter trips. To help you plan your journeys, Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire local authorities have  active travel networks with details of routes. Powys also has information on a green guide.

Information about walking and cycling routes, local active travel clubs you can join and lots of other ideas to inspire you are available on the local authority websites - links are below.
