A family has raised £1,800 for Singleton Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in memory of their baby daughter.
‘Tenacious’ little Tegan Casey Thomas, who was born prematurely in April 2021, spent 25 days in NICU before sadly passing away.
Her parents Kirsty and Dai Thomas never forgot the level of care and kindness they received from the unit’s ‘incredible’ staff and recently set about raising money for NICU to help others.
Central to the Swansea couple’s generous fundraising was a charity band night held in Pyle Legion.
Kirsty said: “Our daughter, Tegan Casey Thomas was born at 22 weeks and 4 days on Saturday 10th April 2021. She lived for an astonishing 25 days in the NICU unit, where she overcame so many obstacles, shocking everyone with her tenacity.
“The staff were incredible, and we will never forget the kindness and determination they showed Tegan and ourselves. Although the NICU is a scary place, we couldn’t have been in better hands.
“Unfortunately, on 4th May 2021, she passed away peacefully in my arms with her Daddy and Nanny by her side. She was the most amazing thing to happen to us and we will forever be thankful for the time we had with her. We love and miss her so much every day.
“We are surrounded by Tegan and carry her in our hearts. Nothing can take away the pain of her loss, but it helps to be able to do things in her memory. Such as raise valuable funds for the place that was her home.
“We recently raised £1,800 for the NICU from our charity band night and raffle (held at the DVLA). We hold it every year and appreciate the opportunity to be able to share Tegan’s story.
“We’ve raised this money to help families who find themselves in similar situations to us, with the hope that their outcome is very different to ours. It’s great to be able to give back to a place that is very close to our hearts.”
Cathy Stevens, Swansea Bay Health Charity’s Community Support Charity Officer, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Kirsty, Dai, and all their amazing supporters for this generous donation made in loving memory of their little girl, Tegan.
“Their Reload Charity Band Night sounded like a brilliant event, and it’s clear everyone had a fantastic time. A huge well done and heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make it such a success.”
Helen James, neonatal matron, also thanked the family for their generous support.
She said: “We as a team are extremely grateful to Kirsty and Dai for thinking of us and taking the time to raise funds for our unit.
“Tegan was a remarkable baby and it was a privilege to have nursed and cared for her.
“I am sure Kirsty and Dai draw great strength from the lovely memories they created with Tegan whilst on the neonatal unit.
“The money raised will help support our babies and families being cared for within our service.
“Thank you so much from the Neonatal Team.”
