Historical 'cutting edge' surgical equipment goes on display

Amputation saw and knives

Historical surgical instruments are on display in a mini exhibition at Swansea’s Singleton Hospital  – showcasing ‘cutting edge’ items from over the past 100 years.

The instruments have been loaned to the Health Board's Heritage Team by Rob Collins, Speciality Manager, Obstetric Theatres, who has a keen interest in the history of surgery.

The exhibition, in Singleton Staff Library, consists of a range of instruments and objects he has collected over a number of years.

They include a set of amputation instruments including a saw, scalpels, a copy of Anaesthesia for Operating Theatre Technicians by C A Foster and an anaesthesia mask.  More than 30 items on display represent a brief insight into the work of those working in operating theatres for the past century or more.

Martin Thomas, Heritage lead for the Health Board, said: “I am delighted we have been able to accept Rob's very kind offer to lend us these items and display them in a 'pop-up' exhibition in Singleton.

“It is my hope that this will be part of an ongoing series of displays across our different sites that will highlight the wonderful range of heritage items that exist in the health board's collection.”

The exhibits are on display in a glass cabinet which has been moved from the Education Centre on the Neath Port Talbot site especially to accommodate mini exhibitions of this kind.  It is situated inside the Singleton staff library and will remain on display for the next few months.

Library Service Manager Lizzy Evans said: “The glass cabinet is a wonderful addition to our library and I am hopeful that this is the first of many such displays that we can create for our staff and student visitors.”

Included in the information accompanying the exhibits are QR codes that link to the collections of the Royal College of Surgeons and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Anyone interested in seeing the exhibition, including visitors to the hospital and the general public, can visit the library during office hours (Mon-Fri 8.30am to 5pm and Fri 8.30am to 4.30pm).  For further information you can contact the library at library.singleton@wales.nhs.uk.
