Morriston Hospital updated Escalation Status
Thanks to the collaboration and hard work of Swansea Bay UHB staff, primary care colleagues and partner organisations, Morriston Hospital has de-escalated from being in a Level 5, Business Continuity Incident to Level 4 (extreme pressure), effective from today, 30th November 2023.
We sincerely apologise to the patients and their families who have faced long waits during this period of exceptional pressure, and we thank them for their patience and understanding.
The huge efforts, perseverance and resourcefulness demonstrated by everyone involved to tackle these challenges have been truly remarkable, and they have our heartfelt gratitude.
However, while the situation has improved, pressure on our unscheduled and emergency care remains very high. It is therefore crucial that all efforts to support patient flow are maintained.
With more cold weather forecast, we expect to continue to be extremely busy as the seasonal drop in temperature can trigger more illnesses.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public who responded to our appeal to avoid attending the Emergency Department unless they were seriously ill or injured. As pressures remain high, it is very important that they continue to consider all alternatives to the ED.
For minor injuries, please try the Minor Injury Unit (MIU) at Neath Port Talbot Hospital. Go here for more about the MIU and the range of injuries it can treat. But note that the MIU CANNOT treat serious injuries or illness. Please don’t go to the MIU if you have chest pain, suspected stroke etc.

Your local pharmacy can also offer FREE over-the-counter treatments for a wide range of common ailments, once you register with them. They can also offer a limited number of prescription medicines without you needing to go to your GP. Go here for more information about how your pharmacist can help.
