Unscheduled care pressures: Business Continuity Incident declared

Update: 11.30am, 26/06/2024 BCI stood down. But the site remains very busy, so please use alternative ways to access urgent care where possible.

Morriston Hospital is under extreme pressure today, Monday, 24/06/2024, with high numbers of acutely unwell patients needing treatment and beds. As a result, we are at our highest level of escalation – a Business Continuity Incident.

Staff are working extremely hard. But waits are much longer than we would like, especially for those who attend our Emergency Department (A&E) with less serious and non-life threatening illnesses or injuries.

At this time you can help us by:

  • Not coming to the Emergency Department unless absolutely unavoidable. But for suspected heart attacks, chest pain or stroke, you MUST go to the ED.
  • For minor injuries, go to the Minor Injury Unit at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, Baglan Way, Port Talbot, SA12 7BX. It’s open 8am to 9pm, seven days a week, including weekends and bank holidays. It can treat adults and children over one with minor injuries to the body such as cuts, burns, sprains, strains, dislocations and broken bones. It CANNOT deal with suspected heart attacks, chest pain or stroke. For these you MUST go to the ED. For more information about what injuries the MIU can treat, go here
  •  Visit the NHS 111 Wales website here to access the online symptom checker. Or telephone 111 for advice and support when it’s not an emergency.
  • Visit your local chemist, because pharmacists are experts in medicines who are trained to offer advice. They can recommend over-the-counter medication for coughs, colds, rashes, bites, aches and pains and, under the Common Ailments Service, offer FREE medication for certain conditions. For details about the Common Ailments Scheme offered by pharmacies go here
  • Remember the Swansea Bay GP Out of Hours Service operates when your own surgery is closed, overnight and 24 hours on weekends and bank holidays. To access this service, ring 111.
  • Collect loved ones who have been told they can be discharged. This is better for them and will help us as we need to focus on caring for those patients who cannot go home.

Thank you for your understanding.
