Sustainable Clinical Leads

In October 2023, the health board created three new roles of Sustainable Clinical Leads to help embed sustainability across its services and sites.

Each clinical lead has time set aside each week to focus on their additional role, which sees them work closely with colleagues in encouraging, promoting and developing ideas to help deliver more sustainable healthcare and, where possible, save the health board money.

Who are the clinical leads?

Elana’s role as an anaesthetist involves delivering care to patients undergoing both emergency and elective surgery. She has the benefit of working with many different specialities and departments, and hopes this can help her link up sustainability projects across these areas.

She is also a founding member of the Swansea Bay Green Group - a staff-led group created to help tackle the climate crisis and make the NHS in the region more environmentally friendly.

Elana has trained in Wales, Sheffield and New Zealand, and is focussing on changes that can be made within the operating theatres.

A medical educator and environmental enthusiast, Sue has been an advocate for sustainability since her childhood.

She has worked in the Emergency Department since 2011, and is leading a team that is looking at the carbon and cost implications of the methods and equipment currently used to see if there are greener and better ways to deliver this care.

Alexandra trained in Swansea and has worked for the health board for the past 17 years.

She is currently manager of the Jill Rowe Neurology Ambulatory Unit, which is a treatment and day investigation unit for people with neurological disorders including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.
