SBU Veterans NHS Wales - Frequently Asked Questions

What do you mean by military related mental health difficulties?

Great question and it is something that often comes up a lot in our service. We are designed to support veterans who have experienced mental health difficulties as a result of their military service. Often our clients may not realise it at the time, but what they have experienced and been exposed to can have a significant impact, years after leaving the military. If you are a Veteran or you know someone who may benefit from our service, you can always contact us to discuss whether they would be suitable.

What kind of clinical presentations do you work with?

Although we are experienced in working with trauma, especially military trauma, we often work with various other clinical presentations such as depression, anxiety, OCD, low self esteem, perfectionism and panic disorder. Only if this is related to their military service.

What psychological therapies do you offer?

Our team are trained and vastly experienced in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing and Cognitive Processing Therapy.

Where are you located?

Our clinics are based in two locations: Swansea (Central Clinic) and Bulldogs Boxing Gym (Port Talbot). We have had a clinic at the Bulldogs for approximately 18 months now and it helps improve accessibility for clients who live in the local area and who may not be able to travel to Swansea city centre.

Who is eligible for your service?

We support individuals who have served in the UK Armed Forces and are experiencing mental health difficulties related to their military service. If you're unsure whether you or someone you know qualifies, please reach out we're happy to discuss eligibility.

Do I need a referral to access your service?

Veterans can self-refer or be referred by a healthcare professional, support worker, or charity. We aim to make the process as straightforward as possible. Once we’ve received your referral, we will then ask you to complete an ‘op-in form’ with basic information, and then offer you a face-to-face assessment.

Is there a waiting list?

Waiting times can vary depending on demand and location. We strive to offer timely support and will keep you informed throughout the process.

Is your service confidential?

Yes. We adhere to strict NHS confidentiality guidelines. Your information is kept secure and only shared with your consent or when legally required.

Can I access support if I have a dual diagnosis (e.g., substance misuse and mental health)?

We understand that mental health challenges can be complex. If your difficulties are related to your military service, we’ll work with you and other services to ensure you receive the right support.

Do you offer support for families or carers of veterans?

While our primary focus is on veterans themselves, we recognise the impact on families and carers. We can offer guidance, signposting, and in some cases, joint sessions if appropriate.

What happens during the first appointment?

Your first appointment is an assessment where we’ll explore your experiences, current difficulties, goals for therapy and develop a plan for that that might include therapy but also other things, like referrals to other agencies. It’s a chance for you to ask questions and for us to understand how best to support you.

Can I choose which location I attend?

Yes, we offer clinics in Swansea and Port Talbot. You can choose the location that’s most convenient for you, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your preference.

Do you offer virtual appointments?

We understand that travel or other commitments can be challenging. We do offer virtual appointments where appropriate, using secure NHS platforms.

I have another query which isn't listed here?

Not a problem - please contact us and we'll do our best to help.
