When you are told you have cancer it is normal to have a range of emotions, such as fear, numbness, anger and sadness.
The stresses and demands that a cancer diagnosis brings can make it difficult for you to prepare yourself psychologically for treatment. However, focusing on your emotional wellbeing can help you feel prepared and reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.
Remember that it’s OK to ask for help and support at any time, however you may be feeling. Don’t feel you have to wait until you are struggling, or until you are offered support. If you have struggled with your mental health before you were diagnosed, you may need to take some early steps to protect your mental health.
The emotional support you may need will be different to the support someone else needs. Some people find it helpful to talk to people, some seek more information, whereas others need support from a psychological practitioner. Whatever emotional and psychological support you need there are things you can do yourself to help your feel more in control.
Help and support: If you are struggling with your feelings, please talk to a member of your hospital team who can put you in contact with additional support services.
