Award for unit's 'outstanding' support for student nurses

Singleton Hospital Day Surgical Unit

Singleton Hospital's Day Surgical Unit has been hailed for the outstanding support it offers student nurses.

The unit, which undertakes minor surgery and investigative procedures, has won a Practice Education Facilitator award from Swansea University.

The award recognises staff on the unit for going the extra mile to create meaningful learning opportunities for student nurses, making sure they are involved, supported and encouraged to engage with all aspects of patient care.

The accolade was awarded at the university's Student Practice Supervisor/Practice Assessor awards ceremony.

One of the student nurses who benefitted from the support told award organisers: "They consistently provide outstanding support for student nurses.

"This is a team that not only welcomes students warmly but truly values their presence and contribution to the clinical environment.

"What sets the surgical Day Unit apart is the comparison and understanding shown towards students who may require additional support.

“The team are incredibly responsive and adaptable, ensuring reasonable adjustments are made without compromising the student's learning experience or confidence.

“They demonstrate patience, encouragement, and a genuine desire to help every student succeed, no matter their individual learning needs.”

Awards judges were also told how student nurses felt their confidence grow after spending time on the unit, felt valued, listened to and encouraged to ask questions, develop skills and reflect on their practice.

The team was judged to lead by example, demonstrating professionalism, kindness, and teamwork, making it a ‘model-learning environment.’

Day Surgery Unit Manager Dorina Stanciu said: “We are so pleased to have been nominated and awarded the Practice Education Facilitator award. We take great pride in the work we do to support student nurses on their journey to becoming a registered nurse. I am proud of all our Day Surgical Unit staff who help make that happen.

Day Surgical Unit nurse Corrine Thomas added: “As a unit we are thrilled to be recognised for the work we do, supporting student nurses from their very first posting through to their final management placement.

“Day surgery offers a unique, diverse learning experience. Students have the opportunity to follow the patient from admission to discharge via surgery, anaesthetics and scrub.

“All members of staff are committed to providing the student with an excellent experience whilst on placement here.”
