Two fundraising dynamos have been awarded Cavell Stars after raising thousands of pounds to help African children with malnutrition.
Community sister Claire Chubb and healthcare support worker Sharon Taylor, both part of Bonymaen Acute Clinical Team (ACT), were inspired by colleague Dr Mikey Bryant’s work at the Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA) hospital’s paediatric department in Liberia's capital Monrovia, which he established to treat children and babies suffering from malnutrition.
The facility has saved the lives of hundreds of youngsters, but is always looking for extra funding to enable it to continue its work.
So Sharon and Claire decided to roll up their sleeves and organise a series of fund-raising events, which resulted in more than £7,500 being raised for the project.
The event included a raffle, a fancy-dress fund-raising walk, an evening of entertainment, and donations from Amazon, Hengoed Park care home, and Swansea Valley Cardiac Support Shop.
Dr Bryant said: “Claire and Sharon are two of the most inspiring people I have ever met.
“As soon as they heard about the work in Liberia, they began to look for ways to help. They have been tireless in their efforts to raise funds for the malnourished children who come to the ELWA hospital in Liberia and have revived the partnership.
“The children who come to the hospital are the poorest in the world and have no other way of getting access to treatment.
“There are children in Liberia who are only alive today because of Claire and Sharon’s efforts to keep the paediatric department going, and when I am in Liberia I am thankful for all their work. Their efforts are special because it was so unexpected and goes so far beyond their normal duties. They have done an outstanding job and it is a privilege to work with them.”
The Cavell Star awards are presented to nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare assistance who shine bright and show exceptional care to colleagues, patients or patients’ families.
Claire said: “Myself and Sharon didn’t think anything would have come of raising money for a great charity, but I am very grateful and proud of ourselves and what we achieved.
“I was overwhelmed to be nominated and to have been given this award.”
Sharon added: “It was a huge surprise to be nominated for an award, and I didn’t expect that at all.
“I still can’t believe we raised so much money, and I’m very pleased with we have been able to raise so much money for Dr Mikey’s charity and supporting malnourished babies in Liberia. I have to say we both really enjoyed it.”
