Scooter ride over Gower inspired by work of cancer centre raises thousands
A group of over 120 scooter riders has raised thousands of pounds for a Swansea oncology ward which has helped a close friend.
The Gower Rebels were joined by supporters from across South Wales for a ride out around the peninsula earlier this summer, followed by an afternoon and evening of entertainment at the Commercial Hotel in Gowerton.
The scooter club, which is based at the pub, held the event to raise money for Ward 12 in Singleton Hospital where a close friend has been receiving treatment.
Singleton is home to the South West Wales Cancer Centre, which supports cancer patients from not only Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, but across South West Wales.
One of the event organisers Alan Robbins said: “The club is really just a group of friends who meet at the pub and we’ve always done charity events up until the pandemic put a stop to it.
“We have a very close friend who was diagnosed with cancer and he has been back and forth to Ward 12 over recent years, so arranging something for their benefit was an obvious thing to do.”
The fund raiser saw the club joined by friends from Merthyr, Cardiff, Llanelli and further afield. Around 120 scooterists joined the ride around Gower. They then headed back to The Commercial to enjoy live music from local bands and DJs. Money was raised through a raffle and the sale of wristbands and patches made specially to mark the event.
A total of £3,720 was raised which has been donated to the ward, as well as funding fleece tops for members of staff with the Singleton Hospital and Gower Rebel logos on them.
Alan Robbins added: “We can’t thank the staff at ward 12 enough for all the help and support that they have provided, not just to our dear friend but to every patient and their families who have had to use their services.”
The South West Wales Cancer Charity Fund is one of hundreds of individual funds that come under the umbrella of Swansea Bay Health Charity.
