Visiting restrictions eased at Morriston Hospital

Normal visiting arrangements have been reinstated at Morriston Hospital in all areas except Ward S from midday today (Tuesday, January 9^th, 2024).

We are able to do this because cases of the winter vomiting bug (Norovirus), Covid, flu and C.difficile, which causes diarrhoea, have fallen.

However, we are continually reviewing the situation and it may change.

Wards may also need to restrict visiting to particular beds on a case-by-case basis and will communicate this directly to visitors.

We’d like to thank visitors for their patience and co-operation since we issued the advice last week as this has helped to reduce infection levels and protect patients.

You can now visit all areas – except Ward S – as normal. But please postpone your visit if you are feeling unwell or have any symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting, a fever or a cough, or you have been caring for someone who is unwell.

At this time of year it is really easy for normal winter illnesses to spread to patients who are vulnerable and will be badly affected.

If you do visit, please wash and sanitise your hands.

For Ward S, visiting will only be allowed if it is for a purpose and should be agreed in advance with the ward manager. This means you can only visit a patient if they are receiving end-of-life care or you are a carer or relative who provides practical help during the visit, such as helping with eating and drinking. You can also visit patients who have dementia or other clinical needs which mean they need support.

Norovirus – This is a really unpleasant illness which causes diarrhoea and vomiting, stomach cramps and aching limbs. But the symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter medicine from the pharmacy and it should pass within a day or two. Please avoid coming to the Emergency Department (A&E) with this illness as you risk spreading it to vulnerable patients.
