Introduction

Endocrinology is the study of hormones. Hormones are produced by the network of glands in the body known as the endocrine system.

Hormones are essential for our everyday survival. They control our temperature, sleep, mood, stress, growth and more.

• Adrenal
• Thyroid
• Gonads
• Calcium disorders

Patients may be referred to secondary care by their GP or from another hospital speciality.

Out of hours medical advice

If you or someone you care for needs urgent endocrine-related advice outside normal working hours telephone NHS 111 Wales. 

You’ll be triaged by a nurse or GP. They can offer advice, issue prescriptions, or arrange a face-to-face appointment if needed.

Sick day rules for endocrine patients

These are especially important for patients on steroid replacement therapy (e.g. hydrocortisone, prednisolone) or with adrenal insufficiency:

1. Never stop steroids suddenly.
2. Double your usual oral steroid dose during illness (e.g. fever, vomiting, surgery, trauma).
3. If vomiting or unable to take oral medication, seek urgent medical attention as you may need injectable hydrocortisone.
4. Carry a Steroid Emergency Card and Medic Alert bracelet.
5. Keep an emergency hydrocortisone injection kit if prescribed.

Suspected adrenal crisis?

If you or someone you care for is showing signs of adrenal crisis such as:

• Severe weakness or dizziness
• Low blood pressure
• Nausea/vomiting
• Confusion or collapse

You must call 999 immediately. This is a medical emergency.
