MMR vaccinations update, August 2023

A picture of an MMR vaccine

Our Swansea Bay immunisation service is currently contacting families who may not be up to date with their MMR vaccination schedule. MMR is part of the NHS Routine Childhood Immunisation Programme. Parents whose infants missed out, or anyone of any age unvaccinated, are urged to come forward.

Are you up to date with your MMR vaccinations?

Now is good opportunity to check as those who have never received a measles vaccine (MMR) are at risk.

Who to contact to check?

Parent or guardians of children under five can contact their health visitor and for anyone aged over five you can contact your GP. Alternatively, if you would like further information on the MMR vaccine please contact our immunisation team on 01792 200492.

If you have recently moved here from outside the UK it is important to let you GP know which vaccines you’ve previously received. Your practice nurse can advise which vaccines you may need to protect you and your family, from diseases such as whopping cough or measles.

Planning on going away for the summer holidays?

As part of your travel health assessment your practice nurse will routinely advise which vaccines you require to protect you against diseases (such as typhoid or hepatitis ). If you haven’t received two doses of the MMR vaccine, this will be recommended.

We are aware there are cases of measles in London at present, and if your holiday is in the UK, we would advise if you haven’t had an MMR vaccine, to consider this now. Although the risk of large measles outbreaks outside of London are low we could see smaller outbreaks in specific populations, including teenagers, young people and under vaccinated communities.

If you are a Swansea Bay University Health Board staff member, the Occupational Health Department will be running ‘drop in’ vaccination sessions during August.
